About us

ILIMA RECORDS (Zimbabwe) exists to facilitate the creation, production and marketing of the rich and vivid indigenous music of Africa, to increase the consumption of African music products globally.

The initiative addresses some of the stark realities of the music sector in current-day Zimbabwe, where there is no record label serving the music sector in Zimbabwe, and:

100% of the music sector in Zimbabwe operates in the informal economy despite some tremendous global successes.
100% of its musicians and executives earn less than the average minimum wage.
100% of these have no pension insurance cover.
0% of music enterprises in Zimbabwe are invested in the stock market.

There is no public or private sector investment promotion, nor support initiatives aimed at music and film sub-sectors – Value-Addition | Beneficiation | Global Market-Upscaling – for meaningful and recognisable contribution to the national GDP.

The National Development Strategy – NDS1 – recognises the economic contribution potential of cultural and creative sectors, and the music sector is committed and ready to play its part to make this a reality.

Ilima Records endeavours to make this a reality by filling the gap created by the absence of a record label which is the biggest impediment to the development, growth and transformation of the local informal music sector to an economically viable music industry.
